Mobb Deep's Prodigy out of prison and back on stage
No rap group has gotten more mileage from straight talk than Mobb Deep. The Queens, New York duo, Havoc and Prodigy, have specialized in plainspoken menace for almost two decades: almost every song is in the aggressive, threatening second person. Havoc and Prodigy can go whole albums without so much as one metaphor. Metaphors are indirect, and Mobb Deep doesn’t want to confuse you. In the 1990s, they were ruthless and unflinching. You might catch them smiling in a video, or maybe flirting, but they never looked comfortable or relaxed.
Thursday night, May 12th, 2011 though, offered legitimate cause for celebration. In March, 2011, Prodigy completed a three-year prison sentence for gun possession, and the duo’s show at the Best Buy Theater in New York was its first since his release.
