What it's like to work with Bill Smith PDF Print E-mail

Bill SmithI met Bill Smith a few years back at one of the benefits that year. That night Bill was on stage with some of the best players in Atlanta and he easily held his own. Now this was refreshing, a horn player standing out with some of the best guitar players in Atlanta, one of the best drummers, a serious session bass player and a number of other Atlanta notables. That night Bill was shining, and shining brightly.

Since then I have stumbled across Bill at at least 18 other music venues all around Georgia with the genre of music being anything from Blues, Country, Funk, Jazz, Rock and Soul. There is always one thing that I notice: Bill Smith always stands out as a perfect horn player, heard but not overbearing to the core song, with talent oozing as he threads his horns all throughout the song with perfection. He does this all while not covering the vocals, but weaving in between them. This is a feat only a very seasoned musician can achieve, to have those perfect chops in the right places at the right times for the right reasons. The clincher for me is when the guitar players that are on stage with Bill want him to do a solo, an extended solo or another solo--because they love his playing THAT much! Now, for those of you that "know" guitar players, this is basically unheard of, as they usually want all the attention towards what they think are the perfect guitar chops blaring from their over-worked amp. This is the kind of respect and admiration that Bill commands from a very humble base.

Bill is always busy, as apparently I'm not the only one that has noticed how special and how needed this caliber of a horn player is in Atlanta, or anywhere for that matter.

Bill does love session work and one thing you will be able to count on if you hire him for your album or project is you can worry about other things, because as far as the horns go, your album will be golden. Bill will step in and nail the horns way beyond what you were expecting, and usually on the first take. Yes, he really is that good.

Got an emergency gig that just popped up and you need horns? Call Bill. Do you have a benefit concert that you know you will need horns for? Call Bill. To put it simply, if you need horns--especially sax--call Bill!

Long live good horn players, as we all know they helped shape and make music what it is today. And with players like Bill Smith around, a lot of concerts and albums will be that much better as soon as he walks into the room.

Last night was a great show -- so well attended that I didn't find a chair to sit in until almost 9:00pm!  Everyone played really well.  It is so wonderful to hear the fruits of the kids' work.  We hear progress every time.

Motel 6 is now supporting Independent Bands! PDF Print E-mail

Rock bands love to trash hotel rooms. But apparently some hoteliers have no hard feelings.
Motel 6
A new promotion links the budget chain Motel 6 with budding rock bands, in hopes of helping poor musicians while also giving the frumpy chain a hipper image. (Right now, the average age of their guests is 35 to 64.)

Here’s how it works: Motel 6 will give free rooms to developing bands on the touring circuit. (The cheapo chain has roughly 1,000 properties in every U.S. state save Hawaii.) In exchange, the bands promise to give shout-outs to the chain on their web sites, and even from the concert stage.

The promo will begin next month with the Massachusetts-based alterna-country band Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers. Other acts on board include the punk-pop band Hit the Lights and the rock act Sparks the Rescue.

All the bands involved are signed to Primary Wave Music, which brought the idea to Motel 6 several months ago.

Later, the promotion is expected to expand beyond bands affiliated with Primary Wave.

To ensure that the groups don’t pull a Keith Moon on the rooms, company spokesman Jeff Palmer told Reuters, they’ve asked Primary Wave to insist that its bands “not go crazy" during their stays.

Metallica doing all it can to save missing fan PDF Print E-mail
Metallica has donated $50,000 dollars in reward money for a fan of theirs who disappeared at one of their recent concerts.

Police have been searching for blond-haired, blue-eyed Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington, 20, since she went missing from a Metallica concert in Charlottesville, Virginia on the evening of Saturday, October 17th, 2009.

findmorgan.com said Harrington's parents were offering $100,000 dollars for the safe return of their daughter or for information leading to the arrest of whoever is responsible for her disappearance.

"The Band Metallica is also adding an additional $50,000 dollars to the reward bringing it to $150,000 dollars for Morgan's safe return or information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Morgan's disappearance," it said.

Metallica has also posted an appeal on its official website along with photos of Harrington under the headline, "One Of Our Fans Is Missing."

"Morgan has blond hair and blue eyes, is 5'6", 120 lbs., and was wearing a black 'Pantera' T-shirt, black skirt, and black boots," the ad said.

"She was not carrying ID or a cell phone. Morgan was separated from her friends shortly before 9:00 pm at the venue."

Metallica urged anyone with information regarding the disappearance to come forward and also asked fans to check if Harrington can be seen in their photos and video footage from the concert.
